Ship of the World Youth Fun Day
On Sunday 17 February 2019 our Club joined with other bayside Rotary clubs: Redlands Bayside, Capalaba, Cleveland, Redlands Sunrise and Wellington Point to entertain over 300 young people visiting Brisbane from Ship for World Youth, which was docked in Brisbane.
The Ship for World Youth Leaders (SWY) is a unique and once in a life time program funded by the Government of Japan. The program invests in young global leaders, preparing them to work and thrive in a globalised world of diverse communities.
240 young people and 40 support staff from 16 countries visited us at the Cleveland show grounds. Our club was well represented as RCWM came together with other clubs from the district feed and entertain these inspirational young people. We were entertained with Welcome to Country by Quandamooka people, a welcome from our Club’s former exchange student Mayor of Redlands Coast Karen Williams, Japanese Consul General, a cultural display from the Japanese youth from the ship, and a very energetic and amazing demonstration of skipping by the World Champion team Cleveland Air Magic.
Then followed lunch of lamb and gravy rolls, salad rolls and fruit. All present came with healthy appetites! Then followed a games afternoon, and presentation of trophies.
We were fare welled with a wonderful, loud thank you from the young visitors, and a special rap song lead by a young man from Africa.
All in all, a wonderful, once in a lifetime occasion enjoyed by not only the youth, but by the volunteers present.
