More than 100 guests attended the International Women's Day breakfast hosted by the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly (RCWM) on Friday 8th March at the Wynnum Golf Club.  Guests were treated to champagne on arrival, a lovely hot breakfast, fruit platters, inspiring speeches, raffle and lucky door prizes and a beautiful view over the golf course.
Emcee, Jodi Dalton kept the event running to time and introduced Aunty Becky, elder and representative of the Quandamooka people, who provided an inspiring Welcome to Country.
Joan Pease MP responded to Aunty Becky's welcome to Country and welcomed all guests including a number of students and teachers from local high schools to the inaugural International Women's Day breakfast.
Dr Claire Brolan, our keynote speaker, rotarian and mother began by acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the lands upon which the breakfast was being held, and said she drew inspiration from the Quandamooka women and girls who had been caring for the land for tens of thousands of years.  She then dedicated her keynote to Jennifer Hayne, former Principal of Moreton Bay College and Moreton Bay Boy's College.
Dr Brolan spoke from the heart about gender equality being a necessity and delivered an inspiring and passionate message of "Strong Women - may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them. And may we also raise strong sons." She was passionate about the need for Federal-level policy and legal reform to meaningfully advance women and girls' human rights for intergenerational impact and change and said she was inspired by Mary MacKillop when it came to speaking up and out for gender equality and women and girls' rights.
Feedback from the event has been positive and several guests indicated they will attend next year. The RCWM proposes to include the IWD breakfast in its annual calendar of events.
For anyone interested in hearing more from Dr Brolan look for her recently published article in the Medical Journal of Australia Insight Plus edition entitled "IWD 2019: Australia leads best when it leads by example."
The Club is grateful to all sponsors including the Lord Mayors Suburban Initiative Fund, Brisbane City Council; Wynnum Golf Club; local politicians who sponsored the student's attendance; and local businesses Sobidah, Simply Bella, Maniatis Greek Dining and Caltex who provided raffle and lucky door prizes. Other sponsors included Ryan Murphy MP, Collegen.U, Nerium International, Deep Grey Photography, and rotarians Andrew Hurst and Jo Soothill.
